Francesc Prat is a conductor and composer who has an open-minded approach to music and who divides his time between symphonic repertoire, opera, and contemporary music, which he is especially drawn to.  This interest has earned him a place on today’s music scene, particularly in Switzerland and Spain, where he has been asked to conduct at events as diverse as the Lucerne Festival, the Basel Composition Competition, with which he collaborates regularly, ArtBasel, the Berlinale and the Sonar Festival in Barcelona.

In the opera field, he was assisting the English conductor Ivor Bolton at the Teatro Real in Madrid, where Prat made his debut in March 2016 conducting a performance of Wagner´s Das Liebesverbot.  He recently premiered the opera Diàlegs de Tirant e Carmesina by Joan Magrané at the Festival de Peralada, and presented it also at Barcelona´s Gran Teatre del Liceu and at the Madrid Teatro Real. He has also conducted recently Pierrot Lunaire at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Die Zauberflöte at the Theater Basel, in a production by Simon McBurney, and the première of Sontòn’s Killroy is not here anymore at the Theater Chur. He has also worked in the Dutch National Opera, Neuköllner Opera Berlin, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, and the Teatre Lliure in Barcelona.  His opera repertoire includes work by various contemporary composers (Haas, Sciarrino, Moser, Oehring, Barret, and Saariaho) as well as operas from classical repertoire (Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Verdi, Rimsky-Korsakov and Britten).

Francesc Prat has established a relationship of regular collaboration with many of the orchestras with which he works, having conducted the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orquesta Nacional de España, Essener Philharmoniker, Basel Sinfonietta, Nederlands Kamerorkest, the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, the Sinfónica de Madrid, Nacional Clàssica d’Andorra, Simfònica de les Illes Balears, Real Filarmonía de Galicia or Orquesta de Extremadura. He is the artistic director of the Orquestra de Cambra de l’Illa de Menorca and of the GIO Sypmhonia and principal guest conductor of the ö! Ensemble für neue Musik.

As a composer, his catalogue includes mainly chamber music and music for ensemble, for which he has been awarded prizes in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Austria.  In October 2012 his first opera premiered in Basel, and in October 2020 a monodrama for solo voice at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Francesc Prat began his musical training at the Escolania de Montserrat choir school. He continued his studies in oboe, piano, and theory at the Conservatori Superior de Música in Barcelona.  He later graduated in oboe at the Musikhochschule Luzern, in composition at the Hochschule für Musik Basel/ Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel, and in conducting at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.
