Jon Malaxetxebarria’s conducting career is developing mainly in the United Kingdom and in Spain. In Spain he has worked regularly with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, most recently conducting concerts in their subscription season. Other appearances include the Extremadura Symphony Orchestra, the Basque Country Symphony Orchestra, Malaga Philharmonic and the Navarra Symphony Orchestra with the Orfeón Pamplonés. In June 2016 Jon conducted a sold-out performance of Handel’s “Messiah” which brought the Zenarruza Sacred Music Festival to a close, with the Bilbao Choral Society and the Zenarruza Kamerata. He has recently been appointed Music Director of the Euskadiko Ikasleen Orkestra, the Basque Youth Orchestra.
In the UK he has conducted a variety of ensembles such as Manchester Camerata, Leeds College of Music Chamber and Wind Orchestras, Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and Nottingham Youth Orchestra. He has worked regularly with the Derbyshire County Youth Band and Symphony Orchestra, including a tour of Japan with them in 2014, and he has been Music Director of Solihull Symphony Orchestra since September 2013.
After completing his studies in French Horn in Chicago with Dale Clevenger, Principal Horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Jon moved to Manchester in 2010 to study conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). Here he was awarded the Mortimer-Furber Prize in Conducting, and in 2011 he was appointed tutor and conductor of the Junior RNCM, a post that he still holds. As a keen advocate of new music, Jon performed the world premiere of Simon Dobson’s Trombone Concerto with the RNCM Brass Band, broadcast on BBC Radio 2.
Jon’s recent and forthcoming highlights include conducting Calixto Bieito’s debut production at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and the Bilbao Choral Society, a return visit to the Zenarruza Sacred Music Festival and concerts with the Basque Youth Orchestra in Bilbao and Valladolid.
