National Music Award 2015 and Grammy finalist, María José Montiel studied in Vienna beginning a career that has led her to debut on stages such as the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Opéra National de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Scala de Milano, Carnegie Hall in New York, Palau de les Arts de Valencia, Teatro Zarzuela and Teatro Real de Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona, Palau de les Arts in Valencia, as well as in the most important opera houses in cities such as Toulouse, Cologne, Frankfurt, Moscow, Washington, Los Angeles, Bologna, Palermo, Beijing, London, Liverpool, Warsaw, Helsinki, Bregenz, and Lisbon.

She is considered by international critics as one of the great performers of Carmen, a character she has sung in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Japan, the United States, China, and Israel. Her long collaboration with Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Chailly marked a turning point in her career with notable successes in Vienna, New York, Milan, Tel Aviv, Naples, Washington, and Tokyo. Her operatic repertoire also includes roles such as Dalila, Amneris, Ulrica, La Cieca, Leonora, Neris and Charlotte. In the vocal symphonic repertoire, works such as Les nuits d’été (Berlioz), Mahler’s Second, Third and Eighth symphonies, Scenes from Faust (Schumann), Poème de l’amour et de la mer (Chausson), Messa da Requiem (Verdi), Ninth Symphony (Beethoven), Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle (Rossini), Shéhérazade (Ravel), Alexander Nevsky (Prokofiev) or Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Das Klagende Lied (Mahler).

Since 2019 she is a Professor of Singing at the Universität der Künste in Berlin.
